Mariet Jose, PhD Student
Microsatellite assisted circumscription of the medicinal rice njavara
Mariet Jose, PhD Student

Njavara is a traditional rice (Oryza sativa cv Njavara) in Kerala. Its grains are used for several Ayurveda preparations since time immemorial. Microsatellite assisted circumscription of njavara in relation to other rice strains is the major interest of Ms. Mariet.

Geethu Elizabath Thomas, PhD Student
DNA barcoding and phylogenetic interrelationship of family Zingiberaceae
Geethu Elizabath Thomas, PhD Student

Species of the tropical plant family Zingiberaceae are widely distributed in India and are used in diverse applications. Ms. Geethu is involved in genome characterization of a set of Zingiberaceae species including molecular identification (barcoding) and phylogeny reconstruction

Smini Varghese, PhD Student
Molecular characterization of defense signaling in Zingiber zerumbet L.
Smini Varghese, PhD Student

Plants have contrasting mechanisms of defense against biotrophs and necrotrophs. Little is known about host signaling in plant-necrotroph interactions. Mrs Smini is interested to understand hormonal signaling involved in host defense in Zingiber spp. in response to necrotrophic oomycete, Pythium.

Dinesh Raj R, PhD Student
Characterization of the genetic resources of rice in Kerala
Dinesh Raj R, PhD Student

Kerala is rich in genetic diversity of rice. Mr. Dinesh is engaged in characterizing the genetic resources of rice in Kerala following microsatellite fingerprinting. He is also interested in the population genetic characteristics of the common wild rice (Oryza rufipogon) in Kerala and the influence of gene flow between wild and cultivated rices in shaping their population characteristics

Kiran K G, PhD Student
Molecular basis of resistance response in Z. zerumbet–Pythium interactions
Kiran K G, PhD Student

Extant ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe; Zingiberaceae) cultivars are uniformly susceptible to soft rot disease caused by the soil-borne necrotrophic oomycete Pythium aphanidermatum (Edson) Fitzp. Zingiber zerumbet (L.) Smith, a wild relative of ginger, is resistant to P. aphanidermatum. Mr. Kiran is interested to know the molecular mechanisms that govern resistance response in Z. zerumbet–Pythium interactions.

Lesly Augustine, Project Fellow
Genetic structure and Phylogenetic characterization of Njavara
Lesly Augustine, Project Fellow

Njavara rice represent an ancient gene pool, found mentioned in classic Ayurveda literature like Charaka Samhitha and Susrutha Samhitha. Mr. Lesly’s interest is to understand phylogenetic position of Njavara gene pool in cultivated rice.
