Generation of soil metagenomic libraries and screening of clones for potential biomolecules
Arjun. J.K., Junior Research Fellow (UGC)

Interested in exploring the metagenomes of the natural environments like estuaries, mangroves and forests of Kerala, which are biodiversity hot spots. The studies will lead to the discovery of novel natural products like therapeutic enzymes, antimicrobials etc. encoded by the genomes of previously uncultured microorganisms, which represents more than 99% of the microbes present in any environment.

Culture-independent analysis of prokaryotic diversity from different environments.
Feba Ann John, Project Fellow

Microbial diversity studies based on culture-based approach indicate that the identified bacterial species represent approximately 1% of all of prokaryotes present in the environment, giving us only a vague picture of our true microbial diversity. Our objective is to elucidate the prokaryotic diversity, in the epibiotic community associated with marine algae and in the soil samples from estuaries, mangroves etc., utilizing the culture-independent metagenomic approach by constructing 16S rRNA gene libraries. The libraries will be sequenced and compared with the public data base to reveal the existence of novel and yet uncultured microbes representing a hitherto unidentified diversity from these unique and extreme diverse environments.
